How to Build Real Relationships in the World of Styling and Design

In styling, relationships are often the starting point. A recommendation from a past collaborator, a conversation at a fair, a shared love for materials or a piece of art—these are the invisible threads that hold the design world together.
Show Up with Curiosity
Design events are a great place to start. Whether it is India Design or a smaller vernissage, showing up is half the work. You do not have to walk in with a pitch or a polished introduction. Just be curious. Ask questions. Observe what others are drawn to. Often, the most memorable connections come from shared admiration for a piece or a conversation about craft.
Follow Up with Intention
When you meet someone interesting, follow up within a day or two. A simple message referencing your chat and offering to connect again can go a long way. Try to keep it personal and authentic. Nobody enjoys a copy-paste message—mention something you genuinely appreciated about their work or perspective.
Let Collaborations Do the Talking
One thing that has helped us grow our network is collaboration. Whether it is working with an emerging artist for a project or co-hosting an event with a brand whose values align with ours, partnerships have deepened our relationships across the design space. They also allow your work to reach new audiences organically.
Be Present Online, but Thoughtful
Social media can be an extension of this. Use it to share your process, celebrate others’ work, and participate in conversations around design. Being generous with your voice builds trust. If someone has inspired you, tell them. If you admire a studio’s work, say so. Most people remember kindness more than polish.
Invest in Long-Term Connection
Lastly, know that real relationships take time. You may meet someone today and collaborate with them years later. The goal is not to expand your contact list, but to build a community around your values. In the world of styling, where intuition and empathy guide much of the work, the same qualities serve well in the way we connect.
And while this holds true for the styling world, I think it applies to most of life. Whether you’re building a career, a business, or just trying to find your people—curiosity, kindness, and genuine connection go a long way. Stay open to others and let shared values lead the way.
